| 2000-01 Schedule/Results Delaware 75, Northeastern 64
Cindy Johnson scored 21 points to lead Delaware to a 75-64 win over Northeastern in an America East women’s basketball game at Solomon Court on Friday. The Blue Hens shot just 36.4 percent from the field, but used some tough defense to force 23 NU turnovers and remain unbeaten in conference play. Delaware improved to 12-3 and 6-0 in America East with its fourth straight win overall. The Huskies had a four-game win streak stopped in dropping to 7-7, 3-2 in the conference. Three other Blue Hens scored in double figures as point guard Megan Delegrotti and Danielle Leyfert added 13 points and Christine Cole had a career-high 12 off the bench. Leyfert scored all her points in the second half, making 11-12 free throw tries after intermission. Dellegrotti was all over the court, picking up seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. Freshman Joi Jefferson led NU with a season-high 18 points on 8-12 field goal shooting, netting 16 of the points in the second half. Kiarsha Curtis added 12 points for the Huskies and Melissa Kowalski had 10. Senior center Lani Lawrence had a game-high 13 rebounds to go with seven points. The Huskies controlled the game early on, hitting five of their first six field goal tries for a quick 12-4 edge with 15:02 left in the first half. NU built the lead to as big as nine, up 15-6 with 14:15 to go. But the Blue Hens answered with an 11-2 run over the next 4:48 to tie the game at 17. NU responded with a 12-5 surge of its own to reclaim a 29-22 advantage with 4:18 left before halftime. That’s when Delaware took over, scoring the last 12 points of the half for a 34-29 edge at the break. The Hens continued the run, scoring the first four points of the second half for a nine-point edge. Delaware made it 42-31 after a pair of Leyfert free throws with 16:43 left. Jefferson’s layup with 16:02 to go broke a stretch of 9:32 that NU went without a field goal. Delaware maintained the double-figure lead for most of the second half until Curtis hit a jumper to make it an eight-point game, 67-59 with 3:41 to go. The Huskies would get no closer, however. It was the Huskies’ fourth straight loss to Delaware. The Blue Hens have now won 14 straight America East regular season games, tying their school record. VISITORS: Delaware 12-3, 6-0 AE
