Melissa Kowalski and Lani Lawrence each scored 14 points to lead Northeastern to a 69-50 win at Hartford in an America East women’s basketball game on Friday at the Chase Family Arena.

Lawrence had 12 of her points in the second half and added a game-high 16 rebounds.

Northeastern improved to 9-7, 5-2 in conference play, with the sixth win in its last seven games. Hartford entered the game having won three of its last four, but dropped to 8-7, 3-4 in America East with the loss.

Freshmen Aisha Williams (12 points) and Joi Jefferson (10) also scored in double figures for the Huskies. NU extended a nine-point halftime advantage to 15 with a 6-0 run to start the second half. Williams hit a layup to cap the surge that put the Huskies up 31-16 with 17:46 to go. The Hawks cut the lead to nine, 33-24, but got no closer as NU answered with a 12-5 run to go ahead 45-29 with 12:10 left. Genny Caruso capped the run with a three-pointer to create the comfortable 16-point edge.

NU’s final 19-point edge was its largest of the game. Hartford tried fouling in the last two and a half minutes to get back in the game, but Williams hit seven of eight free throws to preserve the big lead. Janeka Lopp carried the Hawks, scoring 11 of the Hawks’ final 13 points to finish with a game-high 20 points. The Huskies’ Krystal Keillor made her first career appearance and sank the last basket in the final seconds.

Kowalski had 11 of her points in the first half as the Huskies took a 25-16 lead into intermission. It was an ugly first half that included long stretches (one over four minutes) in which neither team scored. NU jumped out to a 14-4 lead with 12:14 left behind six points from Kowalski.

The Hawks scored four straight points to make it a six-point game, 16-10, but the Huskies answered with a 9-4 spurt for their largest lead of the first half, 25-14, with a minute to go. Hartford’s Kelly Ann Charles made a driving layup in the final seconds to cut NU’s edge to 25-16 at the break.

It was NU’s seventh straight win over Hartford.
