Lani Lawrence pulls one of her 15 rebounds against Drexel on Thursday night.
Michelle Maslowski and Katrina Martin each had double-doubles to lead Drexel to a 69-65 win over Northeastern in an America East women’s basketball game at Solomon Court on Thursday.

Maslowski had 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Martin netted 19 with 15 boards as the Dragons improved to 10-7 overall and 6-3 in conference play. Heather Welborn, who had a career-high 30 points in the first NU-Drexel meeting this season, had 12 points off the bench for Drexel. Laurie Harris led four NU players in double figures with 13 points. Lani Lawrence added 12 points and 15 rebounds. The Huskies dropped to 9-9, 5-4.

Genny Caruso (9 points) made a pair of free throws to give the Huskies their last lead of the night, 61-60, with 3:57 to go. Bridget Scanlan (10 points) then hit one of two free throws to tie the game for Drexel, and the Dragons got the ball back when Lawrence was whistled for a foul away from the ball. Maslowski sank a pair of free throws to put Drexel ahead for good, 63-61, with 3:30 showing. NU missed its next three field goal tries and the Dragons completed the 7-0 surge on a Maslowski layup with 42 seconds left for a 67-61 advantage.

The Dragons made just two of six free throws in the final minute, but NU never had a possession to tie the game.

The second half was tight after the Huskies reduced a nine-point halftime hole to one, 46-45, with a 12-4 run over the first 4:17. The lead was no more than five by either team until Drexel’s decisive 7-0 run in the final minutes.

NU took an early 9-2 lead as Drexel came out and made one of its first five shots and turned the ball over seven times in its first 12 possessions. With NU’s top scorer Melissa Kowalski cold (1-9 in the first half) and Lawrence (3-9) missing some short inside shots, Drexel stormed back with a 17-9 run to take its first lead of the night, 19-18, with 8:24 to go before halftime. The teams traded baskets for the next few minutes before the Dragons went on a10-0 run to turn a 25-24 deficit into a 34-25 edge with 2:58 left. Drexel maintained the nine-point lead at halftime, up 42-33.

Drexel, 81-78 winners over the Huskies in Philadelphia on Dec. 21, completed a regular season sweep of NU for just the second time since joining America East in the 1991-92 season. The Dragons’ only other sweep came in the 1996-97 campaign.
