Freshman Melissa Kowalski scored 22 points to lead Northeastern to a 77-65 win over visiting Quinnipiac.

The Huskies improved to 1-1 with the first win for new head coach Willette White. The Braves, who won their season opener against Rhode Island, dropped to 1-1 on the season. Sophomore Laurie Harris added a career-high 16 points, 12 in the first half, while senior captain Lani Lawrence had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Huskies. Kim Misiaszek led Quinnipiac with 20 points on 7-12 field goal shooting. She also had nine rebounds. Colleen Klopp added 12 points for the Braves, and Katie Caputi had 11 off the bench.

Quinnipiac led 35-29 at the half (shooting 59 percent before intermission), but the Huskies used a 10-4 run to start the second half and tie the game at 39 with 15:57 left. Kowalski had five points, including a three-pointer during the run. With the scored tied at 41, NU freshman Aisha Williams hit her only field goal of the afternoon, a three-pointer that started a decisive 19-6 Husky surge. Genny Caruso (nine points) capped the run with a layup that put NU up 60-47 with 8:28 left. The Braves got no closer than 10 the rest of the way. Quinnipiac had five of its 34 turnovers in the NU run.

Kowalski, who was 10-10 at the line, hit a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left to give the Huskies their largest lead, 77-62, with 19 seconds showing. Sara Esidore made a three-pointer with three seconds left to provide the game’s final margin.

The Braves jumped out to a 19-10 lead with 9:44 left in the first half. It was Quinnipiac’s biggest edge of the afternoon as the Huskies came out shooting cold from the outside. Harris scored seven straight points for NU to start a 14-1 run that put the Huskies ahead 24-20 with 5:34 left before intermission. The Braves answered with a 15-5 run of their own to reclaim the lead and take a six-point advantage into halftime. Caputi had six of the 15 points in the run.

NU is now 3-0 against Quinnipiac all time, winning each of the last three seasons.
