Senior center Lani Lawrence scored a team-high 16 points, including the 1000th point of her college career, as hot-shooting Northeastern won its second game in a row, a 67-52 America East victory over Towson at the Towson Center on Thursday night. Lawrence, the ninth 1000-point scorer in Northeastern history, reached the milestone with 5:00 left in the game, converting a three-point play to give the Huskies a 58-44 lead. In the win, Lawrence made 7-12 shots from the floor and two of three free throw attempts. She also had a game high 12 rebounds with three assists and four blocked shots. The Huskies, who have now beaten Towson six times in a row, took control of the game late in the first half. Northeastern held the Tigers to just one basket over the final nine minutes of the half. The Huskies closed the half with an 18-2 run, overcoming a 13-9 deficit. The Huskies led by 27-15 at intermission. In the second half, Northeastern made 17 of 22 shots from the floor, hitting 77.3 percent. The Huskies' hot shooting enabled them to hold off a Tiger rally, which saw Towson pull within 38-32 with 12:07 left in the game. But, the Huskies responded with a 9-0 run, led by sophomore guard Kiarsha Curtis, a Bladensburg, Md. native. Curtis, who came off the bench to score 14 points and grab seven rebounds, scored five points in the decisive spurt, capping it off with a three-point basket. Curtis made all four of her shots from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers, for the Huskies. Junior forward Genny Caruso added 10 points in the win, while sophomore guard Laurie Harris scored six points with six assists and five steals. The Tigers, who lost their fourth game in a row, were led by senior Jill McGowan, who scored a game-high 23 points, including 21 in the second half. For the game, McGowan shot 8-17 from the floor with five rebounds and four steals. NU started the game missing its first five shots and finally scored for the first time five minutes into the action. The Huskies went down 13-9 with 8:26 left in the half but the offense found its groove, going on a 12-0 run over the next six minutes. NU was led by four points each during the strech by Lawrence and Curtis. The Tigers shot a mere 22.6 percent (7-31) from the field and were 0-6 from beyond the three-point arc for the half. Lawrence led the Huskies in the first half with eight points and eight rebounds. Towson's 19th loss of the year ties the school record for losses in a single season. VISITORS: Northeastern
