NEWARK, DE -- Megan Dellegrotti scored 17 points to lead Delaware to an 80-57 win over Northeastern Saturday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del. The Blue Hens improved to 14-0 in America East play and clinched the top seed for the conference championship. It was Delaware's 15th straight win and its 17th in a row at home. NU dropped to 11-11, 7-6 in the conference.
Delaware extended a 15-point halftime edge to a comfortable 27, 53-26, with a 17-5 run in the first six minutes of the second half. The Blue Hens built their largest lead of the afternoon, 65-33, after a Dellegrotti jumper with 9:16 left.
Kiarsha Curtis had 17 points to lead the Huskies. Curtis made five three-pointers, four in the second half. Her teammates combined to shoot 0-11 from beyond the three-point arc. Lani Lawrence added 14 points and nine rebounds for NU. Lindsay Davis netted 13 points for Delaware and Allison Trapp had 11.
Down 67-35, NU used a 16-0 spurt to cut the lead in half as Laurie Harris capped the run with a jumper that made the score 67-51 with 3:49 left. Curtis had three three-pointers in the surge. NU got no closer, however, as the Hens ended the game on a 13-6 run.
The Huskies scored the first basket of the game, but the Blue Hens fired right back with a 7-0 run, fueled by five points from Dellegrotti, to erase the deficit. Delaware never trailed again after the early run. The Huskies started the game slow, shooting 3-11 from the field in the first seven minutes. With 13:22 left in the half, the Blue Hens went on a 10-4 run over a five-minute span to extend their lead to 23-12.
The Huskies’ shooting woes continued as they shot 8-29 (27.6) from the field and made just 1-8 (12.5) from behind the arc in the first half. Delaware led 36-21 at intermission.
NU has now lost five straight games to Delaware and five of its last six at the Bob Carpenter Center.
