Vermont used a 9-2 run over the final 2:43 to come from behind and defeat Northeastern 61-56 at Solomon Court on Thursday.

With the score tied at 54, Morgan Hall hit a three-pointer for the last of her game-high 17 points to give Vermont the lead for good, 57-54 with 1:39 to go. After an NU miss, Theresa LaRocque made a three-pointer for a 60-54 edge with 55 seconds showing. Melissa Kowalski (13 points) made a layup to give NU a 54-52 edge with 2:43 left before Libby Smith (12 points) sank a pair of free throws to create the sixth tie of the second half with 2:34 to go. There were also seven lead changes after intermission.

Vermont improved to 13-10, 9-5 in America East play, with its second straight win overall and fifth consecutive against NU. The Huskies fell to 11-12, 7-7 in the conference, with their fifth loss in the last seven games. Kiarsha Curtis had 14 points off the bench to lead NU. Genny Caruso added 13 points.

UVM led 25-21 at the half, and built its largest lead of the night, 27-21, on a pair of LaRocque free throws to start the second half. The Huskies scored seven straight points and took the lead, 28-27, on a three-pointer by freshman Aisha Williams with 18:09 left.

With NU up 31-29, the Catamounts answered with a 7-0 surge of their own for a 36-31 advantage with 14:19 remaining. UVM maintained the narrow lead until Curtis sparked an NU rally. With Vermont ahead 49-43, Curtis hit a three-pointer to start a 7-0 spurt. Kowalski’s layup capped the run and gave the Huskies a 50-49 lead with 4:52 to go.

The Huskies led 16-15 with 7:25 to go in the first half, but the Catamounts used a 10-5 run to close out the half with a four-point edge.

NU’s second-leading scorer and top low-post threat, Lani Lawrence, got into foul trouble and played just 24 minutes. She finished with two points and six rebounds, below her season averages of 10.4 and 11.0.
