Lani Lawrence (Falmouth, MA) had 15 points and 14 rebounds to lead Northeastern to a 61-53 win over Hartford at Solomon Court on Saturday.

The Huskies trailed 40-33 with 14:10 left before going on a decisive 21-2 run to go ahead 54-42 with 6:55 remaining. Laurie Harris had all seven of her points in the run, including a three-pointer to start the surge. Kiarsha Curtis hit a layup to give NU the lead for good, 44-42 with 9:31 to go. The Hawks were 1-12 from the field during the 7:15 stretch.

It was the Huskies’ eighth straight win over Hartford. NU improved to 12-12, 8-7 in America East play. Hartford dropped to 12-12, 7-8 in the conference, with its second straight loss. NU has taken over sole possession of fifth place, a half game behind fourth-place Maine.

Kenitra Johnson had 12 points to lead Hartford, while Dorcas Miller added 10. Lawrence, playing in her final home game at NU, was the only Husky to score in double figures as she recorded her team-high ninth double-double of the season. She also added three blocks.

Hartford dominated the final minutes of the first half, using an 18-3 run over the last 5:36 to turn a 23-11 deficit into a 29-26 advantage at the break. The Huskies were just 1-7 from the floor in the stretch. Johnson had the first six points of the run, which also featured a pair of three-pointers by Bridget Murray. Hartford outscored NU 11-7 in the first 5:50 of the second half to build a seven-point edge.

Both teams came out cold as the Huskies made just two of their first eight field goal tries and Hartford two of 11. NU warmed up and turned a 7-6 lead into an 11-point edge with an 11-1 run. Lori Newsome’s fastbreak layup capped the surge and made it 18-7 with 8:12 left in the first half. The Huskies eventually built a 23-11 lead, their largest of the game, with 5:36 left before intermission.

The Hawks were without their top scorer, Janeka Lopp, for the second straight game due to personal reasons. She had 20 against NU in a 69-50 loss on Jan. 19 in West Hartford.
