DURHAM, NH – Northeastern came back from a 13-point halftime deficit to take the lead with just over two minutes to play, but couldn’t hold on and lost a 69-66 decision at New Hampshire on Thursday night.

Lani Lawrence and Aisha Williams each had 14 points to lead the Huskies, who dropped to 12-13 overall and 8-8 in America East. UNH improved to 9-16, 7-9 in conference play. Heidi Plencner led the Wildcats with a game-high 24 points on 9-13 shooting from the field, including 6-7 from beyond the three-point arc. Maren Mathias was 7-7 from the floor for 18 points off the bench for UNH.

NU trailed 52-39 with 8:31 to go but rallied with 23-9 run over the next 6:14 to take a 62-61 edge with 2:17 to go. Lawrence capped the surge with a jumper to give the Huskies their first advantage since midway through the first half. Williams had three three-pointers and Joi Jefferson two treys to highlight the run. UNH answered with a layup by Kelly Donohue to take the lead for good 63-62, with 1:59 left.

The Huskies missed their next four field goal tries as UNH extended the lead to 69-63 before Kiarsha Curtis drained a desparation three-pointer at the buzzer.

NU jumped out to a 17-8 lead as Melissa Kowalski had eight of her 12 points in the early run. The Huskies then went into a scoring drought as Plencner lead a UNH rally. She scored 10 of the Wildcats’ next 12 points as UNH took a 20-19 lead. The ‘Cats continued to roll and completed the 18-2 run for a 26-19 lead with 5:06 left in the first half. Plencer’s fourth three-pointer of the half gave UNH its largest lead of the the first 20 minutes, 33-23, with 1:52 to. The Huskies trailed 35-27 at the break.

The Huskies had won two straight over UNH, including a 59-57 win earlier this season in Boston.
