| 2000-01 Schedule/Results Maine 61, Northeastern 51
Northeastern shot a season-low 28.6 percent and lost at Maine, 61-51, in a key America East game on Saturday. Both teams entered the game with 8-8 conference marks. The Black Bears now have the inside track on the fourth seed for the America East Championship. NU moves into a three-way tie for fifth with New Hampshire and Hartford, both winners on Saturday. NU trailed the Black Bears 30-23 at the half, but used a 9-2 run in the first two minutes of the second half to tie the game at 32. The Huskies took the lead for the first time when Aisha Williams hit a three-pointer for a 37-36 edge with 14:50 to go. After a Maine turnover, Lani Lawrence was fouled and sank a pair of free throws for a three-point advantage, 39-36. Maine then took control, holding the Huskies to just one field goal in the next 8:22. The Black Bears outscored NU 17-2 during the Husky drought and took a commanding 53-41 advantage, their largest of the afternoon, with 5:34 left. NU used a 10-2 spurt of its own to cut the deficit to four as Kiarsha Curtis made one of two free throws to make it a 55-51 game with 1:47 showing. The Huskies would not score again, however, as Kizzy Lopez made a key basket at the other end to start a 6-0 run that provided the game’s final margin. Melissa Kowalski led NU with 17 points, 12 coming in less than 12 minutes to start the game as she netted four three-pointers. Maine jumped out to a 10-3 edge, but Kowalski kept NU close, hitting the fourth of her three-pointers to cap a 13-6 NU run that tied the game at 16 with 8:11 left before halftime. Up 19-18, Maine outscored the Huskies 11-5 to close out the half with a 30-23 lead, matching the Black Bears’ biggest of the first 20 minutes. Genny Caruso added 11 points for the Huskies, including three three-pointers. Maine got great production from its bench as reserves Ellen Geraghty (15 points on 7-11 field goal shooting) and Julie Veilleux (14 points) led the way. Lopez, playing in her final home game, made just 2-11 field goals, while standout freshman Heather Ernest netted only eight points with four rebounds, well below her season averages. Still, with NU’s cold shooting (9-33 in the second half), the Huskies could not take advanatge. VISITORS: Northeastern 12-14, 8-9
