Northeastern shot just 31.5 percent from the floor and lost to Boston University 73-58 on Thursday night at Case Gym.
The loss, coupled with Hartford's win over Maine, sinks NU to the seventh seed for next week's America East Championship at Vermont. The Huskies will take on 10th seed Towson in first round action on Wednesday. The winner will meet two seed Drexel in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
NU made only nine of 34 field goal attempts (26.5 percent) in the first half at BU, while the host Terriers connected on 55.6 percent before intermission in building a 35-24 edge at the half.
The Huskies trimmed the BU lead to six with a 9-4 run to start the second half. Aisha Williams hit a jumper to make it 39-33 with 16:49 to go. BU then turned it over and the Huskies had a chance to cut the deficit even more, but never got any closer. The Terriers outscored NU 19-6 over the next eight minutes to build a commanding 58-39 lead. NU got no closer than 11 the rest of the way.
BU did a nice job on NU's inside-outside combination of veterans Lani Lawrence and Genny Caruso as the pair combined to make only five of 27 field goal tries. Freshman Melissa Kowalski led NU with 16 points, the only Husky in double figures.
Lawrence, 4-15 from the field, had eight points and 11 rebounds. Senior Alison Dixon had a game-high 24 points for BU. Freshman Katie Terhune added 20 points for the Terriers.
The Huskies had won five of their last six against their crosstown rival.
Kowalski ended the regular season with 340 points, just eight shy of Pam Green's NU record for points by a freshman (348 in 1983-84).
