It was another great performance by NU’s newcomers. Freshmen Melissa Kowalski (17 points) and Aisha Williams (14 points) led the way. Sophomore Lori Newsome added a career-high 12 points and rookie Kiarsha Curtis netted a season-high 12 points.
Harvard (1-8) led 55-47 with 11:46 left, but NU (3-3) came surging back. A Newsome layup started a 12-0 run that put the Huskies up 59-55 with 7:34 remaining. With NU down 55-51, Kowalski hit back-to-back three-pointers to give the Huskies the lead. The Crimson came back with seven straight points for a 62-59 lead with 6:11 left.
Williams made consecutive layups for the the Huskies to put them ahead to stay. After Harvard got within one, down 65-64, Kowalski hit a key pair of free throws to make it 67-64 with 3:02 left. The Huskies extended the lead to 71-64 with 1:13 to go.
The teams traded baskets throughout the first half. The Crimson built a 20-14 lead with 9:43 left, before the Huskies scored nine straight points to stake a 23-20 edge with 6:50 remaining before intermission. The Crimson outscored NU 14-6 the rest of the half and led 34-29 at the break.
The Huskies are now 3-0 when trailing at the half this season, 0-3 when having the lead at intermission.
Next up, NU will host Holy Cross on Monday at 7 p.m.
