| Senior Joi Jefferson's team-high 18 points helped the Northeastern women's basketball team finish of its non-conference schedule with a 78-69 win over visiting Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon at Solomon Court.
Jefferson was 9-12 from the free throw line and 4-8 from the field, and scored 15 second-half points while recording five steals to help improve the Huskies' record to 6-3 overall. The Quakers drop to 4-5 overall with the loss.
Penn led by as many as seven points midway through the first half, and took a four-point lead into the break, 32-28. But it was Northeastern that would heat up in the second half, scoring 50 points on 48.5 percent shooting from the floor (16-33) and 76.5 percent shooting from the free throw line (13-17).
With back-and-forth play going on for much of the second half, the Huskies finally began to break the game open with consecutive three-pointers from senior Melissa Kowalski, giving her team a 60-54 lead with 5:40 to play. Although the Quakers would keep it a game, they could get no closer than a two-point deficit before going on to a nine-point loss.
The Huskies had four players reach double figures, including sophomore Maralene Zwarich, who finished with 15 points and eight rebounds before fouling out late in the second half. Freshman Jody Burrows had her best game to date at Northeastern, recording 13 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Junior Francesca Vanin also finished the day with 10 points.
Pennsylvania had three players finish with double digits, including senior Jewel Clark, who picked up a double-double with 27 points on 12-16 shooting from the field and 12 rebounds. Senior Mik Austin rang in with 11 points while junior Karen Habrukowich had 10 in the game.
The Huskies will begin their 2003-04 America East schedule on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. when they host Vermont at Solomon Court.
