Maralene Zwarich and Quiana Copeland both recorded double-doubles, but it was not enough as the Northeastern women's basketball team was edged by Towson, 77-75, in a double-overtime thriller on Sunday at Solomon Court.
Zwarich led the Huskies with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Copeland tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds. Shaleyse Smallwood added 15 points for the Huskies and dished out nine assists.
With the score tied and 0.8 seconds on the clock in regulation, the Huskies inbounded to Smallwood, who attempted a buzzer-beater from halfcourt. The shot went in, but replays showed that she did not get the shot off before time expired so the game went into overtime.
The Huskies opened the extra frame with a 6-1 run to take a five-point lead. The Tigers answered, though, with a 5-0 run of their own to tie the score at 69. Zwarich hit a jumper with 14 seconds on the clock to give the Huskies a two-point lead, but Jamell Beasley got a bucket for the Tigers with 6 seconds to go to tie the score at 71. Smallwood had another chance at a game-winning shot, but missed under defensive pressure.
In the second overtime period, the Tigers came out strong, scoring five unanswered poitns to open the period. Smallwood hit a jumper and Zwarich made one of two free throws to come back within two. With ten seconds on the clock, Smallwood made one of two free throws to cut the Tiger lead to 75-76. Three seconds later, LaShay Rose went to the line at the other end of the floor and made one of two shots for the Tigers to claim a two-point lead. With two seconds left, Smallwood's jumper to tie the score was blocked by Tierra Jackson.
Jackson was one of three Tigers to record double-doubles with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Beasley led Towson with 25 points and 13 rebounds and Kelly Robinson scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds before fouling out.
In the first half, the Huskies led by as many as 11 points after opening the game on a 20-9 run. Spurred by strong shooting in the second half, the Tigers went on a 15-4 run to claim a 40-41 lead with 10:45 remaining and kept the game close to the end.
The Tigers were 30-for-72 (41.7 percent) from the floor, including 15-for-30 (50.0 percent) in the second half. The Huskies shot 29-of-73 (39.7 percent) from the floor. Towson outrebounded Northeastern, 56-44.
The Tigers improve to 7-5 overall, 2-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while the Huskies fall to 4-8, 0-3 in the CAA.
The Huskies are back in action on Friday, when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va., to take on first-place James Madison at 7 p.m. The team returns home for a Sunday tilt with Delaware at Solomon Court at 3 p.m. Sunday's game will be televised on CN8.
