Maralene Zwarich scored 25 points to lead four Huskies in double figures as the Northeastern women's basketball team defeated Virginia Commonwealth, 87-80, in Colonial Athletic Association action on Friday at Solomon Court.
Quiana Copeland scored 20 points for the Huskies, while Shaleyse Smallwood contributed 18 points and Ashlee Feldman added 16 points, leading the Huskies' most potent offensive outburst of the season. Zwarich also led the team with nine rebounds and headed a stellar performance from the free throw line. NU shot 26-of-30 from the charity stripe (86.7 percent), marked by Zwarich's 10-for-10 and Feldman's 6-for-6.
After a tightly contested first half, the Huskies found themselves down three with 15:25 on the clock in the second. A quick 5-0 run put the Huskies up after a layup and free throw from Smallwood. Quanitra Hollingsworth hit a jumper for the Rams for two of her team-high 19 points to tie the score at 52. Smallwood answered with a layup at the other end, but Hollingsworth got it back on a layup from Brittany Pinkney to tie the game again. Smallwood set up Feldman for a three-pointer that put the Huskies on top for good with 12 minutes remaining. The Huskies were able to hold off the Rams for the rest of the evening, leading by 11 at one point before settling on a seven-point margin of victory.
The first half of the game was neck-and-neck throughout, featuring nine ties and six lead changes. The Rams led by six early, but the Huskies did not let them get any further out. A layup from Copeland for NU tied the game at 30 with 6:49 left in the first. For the rest of the period, no team led by more than two points, with a Krystal Vaughn jumper giving the Rams a two-point edge at halftime.
LaKea Jones and Miranda Smith added 13 points for the Rams, while Michele Cosel scored 12 points. Jones was VCU's leading rebounder with eight.
The Huskies shot 29-for-59 from the field (49.2 percent) including an even 50 percent in the second half. The Rams were 32-for-78 from the floor (41.0 percent). The Huskies outrebounded the Rams, 42-36.
The Huskies improve to 6-11 overall (2-6 CAA), while the Rams drop to 11-6 (4-4 CAA).
The Huskies are in action again on Sunday when they host Georgia State at 1 p.m. at Solomon Court. The Huskies defeated the Lady Panthers, 84-81, in their previous meeting this season in Atlanta.
