Tierra Jackson and Kelly Robinson recorded double-doubles for the Tigers as Towson topped the Northeastern women's basketball team, 62-54, in the Colonial Athletic Association regular season finale for both teams on Thursday in Towson, Md.
Maralene Zwarich led the Huskies with 15 points and Shaleyse Smallwood added 12 points. Stefanie Hodell grabbed eight rebounds, while Smallwood and Jody Burrows each dished seven assists.
Jackson scored 18 points and added 14 rebounds for the Tigers and Robinson recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds. LaShay Rose chipped in 10 points for Towson and Jamell Beasley dished eight assists and tallied four steals.
Both teams struggled mightily to put points on the board in the first half. The Tigers opened with a 6-0 run while the Huskies missed their first 10 field goal attempts. Zwarich hit a pair of threes to answer the Towson run and tie the score at six with 9:57 to go in the first half. The Tigers put seven more points on the board before the Huskies came back to get within two, down 13-11 with 6:07 on the clock. NU was able to match Towson for the remainder of the first half and take a two-point deficit to the locker room with a 19-17 score. NU was only 6-for-23 (26.1 percent) from field goal range in the first half, but Towson was barely better, going 6-for-31 (29.0 percent) in the opening stanza.
Both teams made the requisite adjustments in the second half and the Huskies came out of the gate strong, getting points from Zwarich and Erica Sheppard to take a 21-19 lead. After Robinson tied the game for Towson, Smallwood hit a pair of field goals to give the Huskies a 25-21 lead, their largest of the game, with 16:54 remaining. From there, the Tigers slowly pulled away and held off the Huskies for the rest of the contest.
After the dismal first half shooting performances, both teams improved dramatically in the second half. The Huskies went 15-for-34 (44.1 percent) from the floor in the second half, while the Tigers shot 15-for-25 (60.0 percent) from field goal range.
The Tigers outrebounded the Huskies, 41-33.
The loss drops the Huskies to 7-20 (3-15 CAA) to close the regular season, while the Tigers improve to 9-18 (4-14 CAA).
The Huskies will be either the 11th or 12th seed in the CAA Tournament next week in Fairfax, Va., depending on the outcome of Saturday's game between Georgia State and Old Dominion. If Old Dominion wins, the Huskies will be the 11th seed and face UNC Wilmington. If Georgia State wins, the Huskies will be the 12th seed and take on William & Mary. The Huskies will play their opening round game on Wednesday at the Patriot Center at George Mason University.
