The Northeastern women's basketball team pulled off the first upset of the 2006 Aeropostale CAA Women's Basketball Championship as the 11th-seeded Huskies knocked off sixth-seeded UNC Wilmington, 63-54, in the opening round on Wednesday in Fairfax, Va. Shaleyse Smallwood and Ashlee Feldman led the Huskies with 18 points each and Maralene Zwarich chipped in 16 points, becoming the fourth-leading scorer in NU history. Erica Sheppard led the Huskies with five rebounds and Smallwood dished seven assists.

Sahsha Taylor recorded a double-double for the Seahawks with 28 points and 13 assists. Alex Stewart chipped in with 11 points and Lori Drake served five assists.

Both teams matched each other at the start, taking the game to an early 9-9 tie with 11:51 to go in the first period. The Huskies then launched a 13-9 run to take a ten-point lead with 3:40 remaining in the opening half. An 8-2 Seahawk run cut the Huskies' lead to four points at the half.

The Seahawks jumped out of the gate quickly in the second half, coming back to tie the game at 30-30 with 17 minutes to go. Shade Smith hit a jumper to give the Seahawks their first lead of the second half, but a three-point play from Smallwood put the Huskies back up by one. Neither team could gain more than a three-point edge for five minutes as each team traded baskets. A three-point play from Taylor put the Seahawks up by one with 13:50 to play. Candace walker hit one free throw and a Stewart jumper gave UNCW a four-point lead with 12:15 to play. Feldman answered quickly with a three-pointer, but Taylor came back with a trey of her own to get the Seahawks a 44-40 lead, their largest of the game, with 10:41 on the clock. The Huskies then reeled off 11 unanswered points to take a seven-point lead with 6:30 to go. NU stretched the lead to ten points with 1:37 remaining. A last-gasp effort from the Seahawks cut the lead to six, but it would not be enough to extend their season, as a pair of Smallwood free throws at the end gave the Huskies a nine-point lead when the buzzer sounded.

The Huskies shot 20-for-47 (42.6 percent) from the field, while the Seahawks went 19-for-66 (28.8 percent) from field goal range, the first time the Huskies have held an opponent under 30 percent shooting since Nov. 30, 2003. The Huskies were outrebounded, 44-38.

The Huskies now advance to the quarterfinals to face third-seeded Delaware on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va. The Fightin' Blue Hens swept the regular-season series with the Huskies.
