The women’s basketball team handed UMass its first loss of the season, 86-81 Saturday afternoon at Solomon Court. The win improves Northeastern’s record to 2-1 on the season, while UMass falls 2-1. Ashlee Feldman led a balanced Northeastern offense with 21 points, and four other Huskies scored in double figures, including a career high 19 for Kendra Walton, who also posted a double-double with 12 rebounds. Northeastern returns to action Monday when they take on Boston University at Case Gymnasium.
The early parts of the first half were back-and-forth as neither team led by more than three points. NU trailed 16-15, but a jumper by freshman Jasmine Crew with 10:31 left in the half began a 17-4 run that put Northeastern in front 32-20. During the run Crew scored twice, Feldman converted twice from behind the arc, and Walton connected from long distance as well.
Umass was able to close the gap some the remainder of the half, as Northeastern went into halftime 39-31.
After UMass scored the first points of the second half, NU went on another large run, this time a 15-8 spurt that gave the home side a 57-41 lead. Shaleyse Smallwood had six points during the run, and Lucia Pablos chipped in four.
Umass used a large run of its own to cut the lead to 66-61 with seven minutes remaining, back back-to-back three pointers by Feldman and Walton gave Northeastern a 72-63 lead with 5:24 remaining, which was too much for UMass to overcome.
Shaleyse Smallwood scored 18 points for the Huskies and also had a game high eight assists. Lucia Pablos had 15 and freshman Jasmine Crew had 12.
Northeastern shot the ball well throughout the afternoon, shooting 45.2 percent in the first half and an even 50.0 percent in the second half, good for 45.2 percent for the game.
