|  The women's basketball team dropped a 67-47 decision to Long Island University Saturday afternoon at the Wellness Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Ashlee Feldman was Northeastern's leading scorer with 16 points. The win is the fourth in a row for the defending NEC regular season champions and improves their record to 6-2 on the season. NU falls to 3-3. The Huskies return to action next Sunday when they visit Syracuse at the Carrier Dome.
Feldman began the second half by draining a three-pointer, cutting NU's halftime deficit from seven points to 33-29. After the teams alternated baskets over the next few minutes, Jasmine Crew and Feldman connected on back-to-back shots, making the score 39-37 Blackbirds with 15:33 remaining.
Following that point however, LIU began to gain separation, using a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 49-39 lead with 12:09 to play. LIU then kept the pressure on the remainder of the game, preventing NU from getting closer as the Blackbirds' Mikaelar Whippy and Sara Oblak had big second period's.
The Huskies did manage to do a stellar job defensively on reigning NEC Rookie and Player of the Year Valerie Nainima, holding her to just 10 points on 4-15 shooting. Nainima had been averaging over 21 points per game up to this point in the season.
NU was also effective converting off turnovers, scoring 16 points off the 13 turnovers they forced LIU into.
Northeastern trailed in the early parts of the first half 13-6 but scored two baskets in a row on a lay-up by Stefanie Hodell and a jumper from Shaleyse Smallwood to make it 13-10. After Smallwood's basket, the LIU's Heide Mothershead three-pointer on the following possession began a 14-5 run that gave the Blackbirds their biggest lead of the half at 27-15 with 6:21 remaining in the half.
Northeastern then began a run of their own, an 11-2 spurt that was started by a three-pointer by Pablos. With the score 29-21, Crew made a steal and dished to Feldman for a three-pointer in transition. Crew came up with another steal on LIU's next possession and scored on the fast break, cutting the Blackbirds lead to 29-26 with 1:11 to play in the half. LIU then scored the final four points of the half to lead 33-26 going into the lockerrooms.
Feldman scored her 16 points on 6-13 shooting, 3-6 from three-point range. Hodell scored nine points on 4-8 shooting and led the team with seven rebounds.
