Northeastern cut a 12-point deficit with 5:31 remaining to three points, but were unable to get closer as Drexel defeated the Huskies 71-66 Thursday night in Philadelphia, Pa. Northeastern shot 49 percent from the field, and were led by Stefanie Hodell's 13 points. Holding a slim, 29-27 lead at halftime, the Huskies opened the second half on fire, scoring on their first four possessions. Ashlee Feldman opened things up by draining consecutive three-pointers, giving the visitors a 35-29 lead. Two straight jumpers by Shaleyse Smallwood, sandwiched between a Gabriela Marginean field goal, gave NU a 39-33 lead. After Smallwood's second basket, Drexel began to take control of the game, using a sustained run to take a 63-51 lead, its largest of the game, with 5:31 left. The Huskies though responded and surged back into the game. A three-point play by Hodell, and a lay-up by Kim Carr quickly brought Northeastern to within seven points. NU stopped Drexel on its next possession, and Kendra Walton made the score 65-60 on a lay-up with 1:33 remaining. Anora Suber missed a three-pointer on Drexel's next possession, and Smallwood took advantage, scoring again to make it 65-62 with 52 seconds to play. The Huskies though were unable to get any closer, as Stacy McCullough converted two free throws on the next possession with 40 seconds left. With NU looking to get back within three points, Nicole Hester stripped Smallwood driving to the basket, which led to two more Drexel foul shots with 22 seconds left, icing the game. Northeastern trailed early in the contest 16-6, but were able to rally. Walton scored five consecutive points on a lay-up and three-pointer, and after holding Drexel on their next possession, Jasmine Crew converted a traditional three-point play to make the score 16-14. Hester scored for the Dragons on their next possession, but Hodell answered for Northeastern, getting the Huskies to within 18-16 and giving Northeastern a 10-2 run. Drexel was able to maintain its slim lead until a lay-up by Lucia Pablos gave the Huskies their first lead of the game with 4:48 remaining. After the teams traded baskets again, Walton knocked down a three-pointer, giving NU a 29-25 advantage with 3:01 left. The remainder of the half turned into a defensive struggle, as Narissa Suber's lay-up with 1:22 left were the only points for the rest of the half. Walton with 12 points and Smallwood with 11 also scored in double figures for Northeastern. Smallwood also tied her season high for assists with eight. Walton was NU's leading rebounder with seven, and the Huskies outrebounded Drexel, 29-25. NU falls to 0-4 in the CAA and 5-9 overall. Drexel wins it eighth straight game and improves to 4-0 in the CAA, and 9-6 overall. Northeastern returns to the court Sunday afternoon against Delaware in Newark, Del. Tip-off is 1 p.m.
