The Huskies took an 85-51 loss to No. 13 Old Dominion Thursday night at Solomon Court. The Monarchs' Jessica Canady scored a game high 28 points, while Lucia Pablos led a balanced Husky offense with 10 points. Old Dominion remains unbeaten in the CAA with a 6-0 record, and improves to 15-3 overall. The Huskies drop to 5-11 overall.
Old Dominion, winners of 16 straight CAA Championships came into the game ranked 13th in the latest AP Poll and 18th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll. The Monarchs played to their reputation as the team to beat in the CAA once again, as they proved to be too much in the end.
The Huskies hung tough early on, leading 6-2 on a basket by Kim Carr and foul shots and a lay-up by Jasmine Crew. Northeastern's defense frustrated Old Dominion early on, as the Huskies crashed the boards, and forced ODU into some missed shots and turnovers.
Northeastern held a 10-5 lead, but Canady began to take over from that point forward, asserting herself in the paint, and helping ODU open up a wide margin in points scored in the paint.
Despite Canady scoring 22 of her 28 points in the first half, Northeastern only trailed 37-25 at the 3:58 mark after a 6-3 run brought the Huskies to within 12 points. The Monarchs though closed out the half on a 9-6 run to open up a 15 point halftime lead.
The Huskies more than held their own on the glass, despite being at a size disadvantage. NU grabbed 43 rebounds to Old Dominion's 47, with Stefanie Hodell leading the way for the Huskies with seven. The Monarchs came into the game +4.4 rebounding margin, among the best in the CAA.
Northeastern returns to the court Sunday afternoon in Atlanta, Ga. against Georgia State. Tip-off is 2 p.m.
