The Northeastern women’s basketball team fell to the Virginia Commonwealth Rams 68-39 Sunday afternoon at the Siegel Center in Richmond, Va. Kim Carr had 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while Jasmine Crew scored a team-best 11 points.
VCU started the first half red-hot going on an 8-0 run. NU’s Kim Carr grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a jumper off the glass to end the Rams run. Down 11-4 the Huskies hit back-to-back buckets highlighted by an Ashlee Feldman steal and assist to Jasmine Crew for a fast-break lay-up. Northeastern pulled within four when Kendra Walton hit a deep three-point field goal from the top of the key.
The Rams countered back with a 12-3 run taking a 25-12 advantage. Feldman penetrated in through the lane feeding the open Brittany Wilson for a lay-up ending Northeastern’s five-minute field goal drought. NU continued to squeeze the gap when Walton hit yet another trey pulling NU within 11, 28-17 with 5:30 left in the half. However, VCU interior offense gave them a 33-19 edge going into halftime.
The Rams continued their scoring ways in the second half hitting two quick baskets to start the half. Carr answered right back for the Huskies by hitting a floater off the glass as the shot clock expired. Following two VCU scores, NU went on a 5-0 run capitalized by a Crew jumper in the paint to pull within 15 with 13:56 remaining.
That was as close as Northeastern would get, as Virginia Commonwealth’s offense was too much for the Huskies to handle.
Northeastern returns home Wednesday night when it hosts Hofstra on senior night at 7 p.m.
