Walton's late three pointer lifts Huskies past Pride

On senior night, the Northeastern women’s basketball team defeated Hofstra 55-51 Wednesday night on Solomon Court sweeping the season series. With 54 seconds left, Jamie Conroy dished the ball to an open Kendra Walton who hit a three-point shot lifting the Huskies past the Pride in their season finale.
With the victory, Northeastern ends its three-game losing streak and end the regular season 11-18 overall and 8-10 in the CAA. The win also puts the Huskies in the sixth spot in the conference standings going into next week’s CAA Tournament in Harrisonburg, Va. Hofstra falls to 16-13 overall and 8-10 in the conference good for seventh.
Jasmine Crew had a superb night scoring 15 points, grabbing six boards, and adding three steals and three assists. Kendra Walton contributed with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Kim Carr and Brittany Wilson supplied eight points and six rebounds apiece.
Hofstra had three players score in double figures including Jess Fuller with 16. She also had 11 rebounds and five blocks.
Before the game the Huskies honored their lone senior Ashlee Feldman. Feldman, who is 11th in the all-time scoring list with 1,205, hit her 236th career three-point shot, second-best in NU history, to start off the contest and ultimately finishing with three points on the night.
In the first half both teams went toe-to-toe exchanging baskets. Rookie Brittany Wilson got NU going early in the half by scoring four points and dishing out four dimes in the first five minutes to help boost the Huskies to a 15-7 advantage with 13:44 left in the half. However, Hofstra’s Jess Fuller went on a tear scoring offensive end and blocking and altering shots on the defensive ending, helping go on a 12-2 run and a 19-17 advantage at the nine-minute mark.
Kashaia Cannon came off the bench and put an end to the run by hitting back-to-back three pointers giving the Huskies a 25-21 edge. The Pride came back to tie the score at 27 all, but a Walton free throw put NU up by one going into the half.
In the second half Hofstra’s Sam Brigham started off strong scoring five straight points putting her team up by that same margin. The Pride would increase their lead to six, 40-34 before the Huskies rallied to a 6-0 run capitalized by a Carr lay-up from Crew to tie up the score.
With just over four minutes to play, Crew penetrated through the lane blowing past a Hofstra defender nailing a jumper while getting fouled. Crew completed the old fashion three-point play to put NU up by five. But the lead would be short lived as Hofstra hurdled to a 51-47 advantage. In spite of this, Northeastern showed no fear as it hit back-to-back three pointers from Cannon and Walton to seal the win.
Northeastern will head to CAA Tournament as the sixth seed and will take on the No. 11 seed Georgia State Panthers Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va.
