| 2007-08 Schedule/Results Bill Carpenter named new assistant women's basketball coach
“Coach Carpenter’s experience and knowledge of the game is exactly what the program needs to continue its rise to the top of the CAA,” said La-Force Mann. “He is a great teacher who has spent countless hours studying his craft. Having already worked with coach Carpenter, I have witnessed his true character and passion and I look forward to working with him again.”
Carpenter will be the Huskies’ co-recruiting coordinator, individual player development coordinator, academic coordinator and community service coordinator. In addition to those duties, Carpenter will be heavily involved in film study and advance scouting.
After serving as assistant coach at Fairleigh Dickinson during the 2004-05 season, Carpenter took a sabbatical from collegiate coaching from 2005-07. During that time he was the head coach of the North Carolina Elite basketball club and worked as a volunteer assistant coach at Chapel Hill High School. He also regularly attended the practices of Duke University’s women’s team and the University of North Carolina’s men’s team.
“That experience provided great insight into basketball at the highest level which compliments my vision for Northeastern,” said La-Force Mann.
Prior to his stint at Fairleigh Dickinson, Carpenter spent two seasons at Iona College as an assistant coach. While at the New Rochelle, N.Y., school, he helped lay the foundation for the program to ascend to one of the top Division I programs in the Northeast. He was the individual player development coordinator, directed all in-season practice segments for post players and directed all aspects of the Gaels’ transition offense.
Before his time at Iona, Carpenter and La-Force Mann worked together for two seasons as assistant coaches at Long Island University. The pair helped lead the Blackbirds to consecutive Northeast Conference Championship games, with LIU winning the conference in 2001. He also helped coach three different players to all-conference honors, including the 2001-02 NEC Player of the Year Tamika Dudley.
Carpenter began his collegiate coaching career in 1997 as an assistant with the Dowling men’s team, a position he held for two seasons. He helped the team reach the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1998. For the 1999-00 season, he was an assistant with the Dowling women’s team, helping the program win its first ever playoff game.
A native of Centereach, N.Y., Carpenter attended Suffolk Community College in Selden, N.Y., from 1990-1992 where he played point guard. He completed his bachelor’s degree in psychology at LIU in 2002.
The Huskies are coming off a 14-16 season where they had a seven-game winning streak, tied for second longest in school history, and advanced to the CAA Tournament quarterfinals.
