Joe Wilhelm is entering his 10th season as the head coach of Northeastern women’s crew. However, he has had a much longer association with Henderson Boathouse, as he joined the women’s program after serving seven years as the men’s freshman coach. His career record after nine seasons is 60 wins to 45 losses in regular regatta season races. In 2007, his Huskies finished sixth at the Eastern Sprints and in 1999 and 2000 the varsity eight was invited to the NCAA Championship. Last year, Northeastern went 10-3 and was an Eastern Sprints finalist.

Wilhelm brings a total of 24 years of coaching to the job. Before joining the Northeastern staff in 1992, he had an impressive run as head coach of crew at Columbia University, overseeing both the men’s and women’s programs.

Wilhelm initially started at Columbia in 1983. He founded the Columbia women’s rowing program and coached it for its first two seasons. Wilhelm eventually oversaw the entire crew operation, including the team’s recruiting and boathouse. He also served as an assistant to both the men’s lightweight and heavyweight crews.

Before his stint at Columbia, Wilhelm coached for a year at his alma mater, West Park Secondary School, where he rowed from 1974-78. He also was a member of the St. Catharines Rowing Club from 1977-83.

At Northeastern, Wilhelm’s freshman boats were consistently among the best in the East, earning silver and bronze medals in both the IRA Regatta and Eastern Sprints. Responsibility is nothing new for Wilhelm. As an assistant to the Husky men’s program, he was in charge of all aspects of the freshman crew, planning and implementing effective training and conditioning programs as well as identifying and recruiting highly motivated and skilled student-athletes.

Now he fulfills an even larger role as the leader of the women’s program. Wilhelm also has played a significant role in the rowing community as part of the commitment to elevate the sport in the United States. At the Boston Rowing Center in 1994 and ’95, he was in charge of women’s sculling. Among his disciples was Linda Muri, who won medals at both the U.S. and World Championship levels. In 1988, Wilhelm directed a pre-elite camp, and in 1997 and ’98 he ran the men’s U.S. Lightweight Development Camp. In the summer of ‘06 he coached at the Under-23 Development Camp in Boston and last year he directed it.

Wilhelm is a 1982 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he rowed all four years and captained the ’82 Penn crew. A native of St. Catharines, Ontario, and an oarsman of international reputation, he was a three-time member of the Canadian National Team.

Wilhelm and his wife Carol reside in Westwood, Mass. with their daughters, Allison and Anna.
