Schelling named Defensive Player of the Week
March 2, 2009
Boston, Mass.
Freshman Florence Schelling was named Hockey East Pure Hockey Co-Defensive Player of the Week by the conference on Monday, sharing the weekly honor with Providence's Genevieve Lacasse.
Schelling earned the accolade by stopping 35 of 37 shots against Boston University in the Hockey East quarterfinals Saturday. Schelling's efforts kept Northeastern within a goal of BU the entire game despite being outshot 37-23. Lacasse made 18 saves in a shutout win over fifth-seeded Connecticut Saturday.
The conference honor is Schelling's fifth of the season. She was named Defensive Player of the week Oct. 13 and Feb. 9, as well as Rookie of the Week Oct. 20, and Rookie of the Month for October.
Schelling finishes her rookie season with a 2.24 goals against average and a .933 save percentage in 20 appearances for Northeastern. Her save percentage ranks third in Hockey East, and is the best season-long save percentage posted by an NU goalie since 2003-04, when Chanda Gunn finished the season with a .938.
