Four Huskies earn Hockey East accolades
March 6, 2009
Boston, Mass.

Four members of Northeastern’s women’s hockey team were recognized with Hockey East honors Friday at the league’s annual awards banquet. Sophomores Kristi Kehoe and Julia Marty were named All-Hockey East honorable mention, and freshmen Stephanie Gavronsky and Florence Schelling were named to the Hockey East All-Rookie team.

Kehoe, a forward from Bakersfield, Calif., led Northeastern in scoring for the second straight year, totaling 25 points on 16 goals and nine assists. This season she scored her first career hat trick in an Oct. 4 matchup with Union, and was named Hockey East Player of the Week and USCHO.com National Offensive Player of the Week. She turned in five multi-point games, tied for best on the team, and compiled two four-game point streaks. On Oct. 19, she notched the game-winning-goal in Northeastern’s 3-0 win over then-number 10 Connecticut. Kehoe was named Hockey East All-Rookie in 2007-08.

Marty, a sophomore from Nussbaumen, Switzerland, led Northeastern defenders in scoring, posting a 4-13-17 scoring line despite missing ten games with a recurring shoulder injury. Marty’s goal, assist, and point totals are all career highs. She also tied for the team lead in plus-minus. Marty posted five multi-point games on the season and notched her first career hat trick Nov. 9 against Maine. She was named Hockey East Player of the Week Nov. 10.

Gavronsky, a freshman from Sherwood Park, Alberta, played in all 35 games for Northeastern at defense, and finished with a 2-7-9 scoring line.  She posted a three-game point streak with assists Oct. 18, 19 and 25. She scored the game-winning goal against Vermont Dec. 6.

Schelling, a freshman from Oberengstringen, Switzerland, played 19 games in goal for the Huskies, and posted a .933 save percentage. She averaged over 30 saves per game, and earned two shutouts. She made 95 saves over two back to back games against Providence, stopping 53 shots on Feb. 6 and 42 on Feb. 7. Her 53-save performance was the Hockey East regular season single-game high. She was named Rookie of the Month for October, Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 13, Feb. 9, and March 2, and Rookie of the week on Oct. 20.

Gavronsky and Schelling are the second consecutive pair of Huskies to represent Northeastern on the All-Rookie team: in 2007-08 Kristi Kehoe and Leah Sulyma were selected to the squad.

In addition to the four skaters who earned accolades, Head Coach Dave Flint finished as the runner-up for Hockey East Coach of the Year. In his first year at Northeastern Flint has led the Huskies to their best record and first playoff appearance since 2003-04. The Huskies also won as many games this season as in the past two seasons combined.

Hockey East awards are selected through a vote of the league’s eight head coaches.

Northeastern finished the 2008-09 season with a 12-20-3 record, the program’s best mark since 2003-04. Northeastern’s 7-13-1 Hockey East record earned the Huskies a sixth-place finish, and the program’s first playoff berth since 2003-04.
