April 21, 2009
Boston, Mass.

The women’s hockey team named its three captains and gave out its end-of-season awards last week at a banquet at Matthews Arena. Katy Applin, Annie Hogan, and Julia Marty will serve as tri-captains for the 2009-10 season. Freshman goaltender Florence Schelling took home the team’s top awards, as she was named the team’s Rookie of the Year as well as Most Valuable Player. The team also recognized its four Hockey East award recipients, and honored senior Missy Elumba, who earlier this month was given the Hockey Humanitarian Award.

Applin will wear the C for the second time in her senior season of 2009-10 after serving as a co-captain in her junior season of 2008-09. She finished with 12 points on four goals and eight assists. Hogan, who was an assistant captain as a junior in 2008-09, will serve as the second captain. Hogan played in all 35 games for the Huskies in 2008-09, tallying a career-high 13 points on five goals and eight assists. Sophomore Julia Marty will be the third captain. She will be a junior in 2009-10. Marty led NU defenders in scoring, recording 17 point on four goals and 13 assists despite missing 10 games due to injury.

Schelling played in 19 games for the Huskies, logging 1123:45 minutes and posting a 2.24 goals against average and a .933 save percentage. Her save percentage tied for fourth-best in Division I, and is the best single-season mark by a Huskies goaltender since 2003-04 when All-American Chanda Gunn finished with a .938. Schelling averaged over 30 saves per game, and recorded two shutouts. She was named Hockey East Rookie of the Month for October, Hockey East Rookie of the Week Oct. 20, and Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week Oct. 13 and Feb. 9. On Feb 6, she made a Hockey East season-high 53 saves against Providence.

Elumba was given the team’s “Seventh Man” award for her contributions to the team throughout the season. She was praised for her positive attitude and caring for her teammates. Elumba was also recognized for having earlier received the Hockey Humanitarian Award, an honor given annually to college hockey’s finest citizen. The Humanitarian Award honors Elumba’s extensive charitable, humanitarian, and philanthropic works over the last five years both at Northeastern and abroad.

Junior goalie Sydney Arbelbide was given the Coaches Award for her dedication to the team both on and off the ice. Arbelbide played 12 games in net for Northeastern in 2006-07, making 245 saves with a 4.32 goals against average and a .854 save percentage.

The team recognized its four players that earned Hockey East awards in the 2008-09 season: freshmen Stephanie Gavronsky and Florence Schelling were named to the All-Rookie team, while sophomore Julia Marty and junior Kristi Kehoe were both named All Hockey East honorable mention. Northeastern has had two players named to the All-Rookie team two years in a row: Kehoe and Leah Sulyma were picked for the squad in 2007-08.
