May 21, 2009
Boston, Mass.

Dave Flint, the head women’s ice hockey coach at Northeastern University, was named an assistant coach for the 2010 U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team today, alongside Jodi McKenna, head women’s ice hockey coach at Wesleyan University. The pair will join Mark Johnson, head women’s ice hockey coach at the University of Wisconsin, who was previously named the head coach for Team USA through the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

The 23 players who will comprise the 2009-10 U.S. Women’s National team will be selected in late August, and will compete in the Hockey Canada Cup from Aug. 31 to Sept. 6 in Vancouver. The team will then take up residency in Blaine, Minn., and participate in the Qwest Tour, a series of ten games played in nine cities that runs from Sept. 25 through February 2010. The team will also prepare for the Games by competing in the 2009 Four Nations Cup from Nov. 2-8 in Finland, and playing three games against the Canadian National Team.

“We are all very excited for Dave, and Northeastern is proud to have him representing the university and our women’s hockey program as a coach for our nation’s Olympic team,” said Northeastern Athletics Director Peter Roby. “The appointment is a testament to the quality of coach he is, and the experience and exposure that he will get as a result will be great assets both to the women’s hockey program and to Northeastern. Linda and Lauren are great coaches, and I am confident in their ability to run the team and keep it moving in a positive direction in Dave’s absence.”

“I am very grateful to Michele Amidon, Mark Johnson and USA Hockey for providing me with such a tremendous opportunity, and to Peter Roby and Northeastern University for being so supportive,” said Flint. “I look forward to working with a great coaching staff as well as the best female hockey players in the world.”

On Feb. 27, Flint was named one of two assistant coaches for the U.S. Women’s National Team that competed at the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation World Women’s Championship from April 4-12 in Hameenlinna, Finland. Flint joined McKenna as an assistant, and was behind the bench as Team USA went on to win gold.

Prior to the 2009 world championships, Flint served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Women’s Select Team that won gold at the 2008 Four Nations Cup. Flint was the goaltending consultant for the entire U.S. Women’s National Program last season, and was on hand when the U.S. won gold at the 2008 world championships.

In his first season at Northeastern, Flint was runner up for Hockey East coach of the year as he led the Huskies to a 12-20-3 record, their best mark since the 2003-04 season. He also led the team to its first Hockey East playoff appearance since 2003-04.

Before being named Northeastern’s head coach prior to the 2008-09 season, Flint spent five years as head coach at St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., where he compiled an 88-15-2 (.848) record. In four seasons as a varsity team under Flint (his first year the program was a club sport), the Hawks won two ECAC East regular season championships and three ECAC Open Tournament championships. Flint was recognized as ECAC East Coach of the Year and a finalist for National Coach of the Year three consecutive seasons from 2006-08.
