Huskies place 14 on All-Academic squad

Kate Applin leads a group of 14 Northeastern women's hockey players that have been honored with Hockey East academic awards, the conference office announced Tuesday. Applin was named one of two Hockey East Top-Scholar Athletes, Ali Bielawski, Missy Elumba, and Cassie Sperry were all honored as Distinguished Scholars and Applin and Elumba were named to the Academic All-Star team. Applin, Bielawski, Elumba, Sperry, Lori Antflick, Ginny Berg, Lindsay Berman, Stephanie Gavronsky, Annie Hogan, Julia Marty, Erin Reil, Leah Sulyma, Vanessa Tomchik, and Alyssa Wohlfeiler were all named to the All-Academic team.
The Top-Scholar Athlete award is given to a student-athlete who finishes the academic year with the best GPA in the league. The Distinguished Scholar award is given to seniors who complete their careers with a 3.0 GPA or better. The Academic All-Star team consists of the student-athletes who have the best GPA at their respective positions. Each All-Academic team member finished the academic year with a 3.0 GPA or better.
Applin, captain of the 2008-09 Huskies, finished the year with a 4.0 GPA while majoring in Mechanical Engineering. She played in all 35 games for the Huskies as a defenseman with a career-high four goals. She was also named to the Academic All-Star team as one of the top student-athletes at her position. She is now a three-time member of the All-Academic team.
Bielawski, Elumba and Sperry become just the sixth, seventh and eighth Huskies to earn the Distinguished Scholar honor since the inception of the award in 2002-03.
Bielawski, a Finance and Insurance major, played in all 35 games with a career-high 19 points including two game winning goals. She finishes her Northeastern career as a four-time member of the All-Academic team.
Elumba, a Health Sciences major and winner of the 2009 Hockey Humanitarian Award, tied a career high in points with seven, four coming on goals. She is a four-time All-Academic team honoree and earned her first Academic All-Star selection.
Sperry, a Communications major, missed her senior season due to injury. She played in 99 games with 23 points during her career at NU and is now a four-time All-Academic team selection.
Antflick, a sophomore Education major, played in 35 games at both forward and defense. Antflick scored a career high three-goals on 30 shots and registered two assists.
Berg, a junior Nursing major and two time All-Academic honoree, played in 17 games at defense for the Huskies with one assist.
Berman, a junior with an undecided major, scored six goals with nine assists for 15 points on the season, finishing fifth on the team in scoring.
Gavronsky, a freshman with an undecided major, played in all 35 games for
the Huskies with two goals and seven assists.
Hogan, a junior Communications major and two time All-Academic honoree, served as the assistant captain for the Huskies and finished sixth on the team in scoring setting a career high in goals (5), assists (8), and points (13).
Marty, a sophomore with undecided major collected seventeen points for the Huskies finishing forth on the team in scoring. Marty had four goals and 13 assists.
Reil, a senior Communications major, served as an assistant captain for the Huskies with three points. Reil was important on the blue line for the Huskies and did not miss a game in her four-year career.
Sulyma, a sophomore Business major, had a standout season between the pipes for the Huskies with a career best in winning percentage (.471), shutouts (3), and save percentage (.921). Sulyma was twice named the Hockey East Pure Hockey Defensive Player of the Week and became only the ninth NU goalie to record over 1,000 saves.
Tomchik, a sophomore Engineering major and two time All-Academic honoree, played in 34 games for the Huskies on the blue line.
Wohlfeiler, a sophomore Criminal Justice major, played in all 35 games for the Huskies this season with a career high eight-goals. Wohlfeiler was second on the team in scoring with 21 points.
Hockey East placed 92 student-athletes on the All-Academic team this season, and Northeastern had the third-most of any team in the conference with 14. Northeastern's three Distinguished Scholars was the most by any team. The Huskies finished the 2008-09 season with a 12-20-3 record under first-year head coach Dave Flint, the team’s best since the 2003-04 season along with the team’s first playoff appearance since the 2003-04 season.
