Esposito, Schelling earn Hockey East awards
Nov. 2, 2009
Boston, Mass.
 Brittany Esposito
Freshman Brittany Esposito (Edmonton, Alberta) and sophomore Florence
Schelling (Oberengstringen, Switzerland) earned weekly Hockey East
awards, as announced by the conference today. Esposito was recognized
by Hockey East as the Bauer Rookie of the Week, while Schelling earned her third
Defensive Player of the Week honor this season.
Both players played huge roles in the Huskies' sweep of Vermont last weekend. On Friday night, Esposito scored her first collegiate goal and added an assist in Northeastern's 3-0 victory in Burlington. Schelling slammed the door on the Catamounts' attack, making 27 saves for her second shutout of the season.
The next night, Esposito scored the game's only goal in a shorthanded situation in the third period. Schelling posted yet another shutout, making 15 saves and running her shutout streak to over 145 consecutive minutes.
Schelling took home the Defensive Player of the Week award on Oct. 5 and Oct. 12, and has now received the honor six times in her career. The Huskies have now laid claim to four of the first six Hockey East
Defensive Player of the Week honors this season, as junior Leah Sulyma garnered the award on Oct. 26.
Schelling leads the nation with a 0.74 GAA and a .970 save percentage. Behind Schelling, Sulyma and a stingy defensive corps, the Huskies are the only team in the country to average less than one goal against per game.
Esposito, Schelling and the Huskies will look for their fifth straight win on Sunday, Nov. 8 at Providence at 2 p.m.
