Huskies ranked No. 9 in latest national polls
Nov. 2, 2009
Boston, Mass.
The Northeastern Huskies have been selected as the No. 9 team in the
nation, according to both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey
Magazine national polls. The Huskies are off to a 7-1-1 start and are
currently in first place in the Hockey East standings with a 3-0-1-1
conference record. This is the Huskies' best start since the 2001-02
season when the team opened with 10 straight wins.
The Huskies were last ranked in both polls on Nov. 10-11, 2008, following a 5-0-2 start in the month of October. The last time Northeastern was ranked ninth or higher was on Nov. 14, 2002, when the team appeared at No. 9 in the USCHO.com poll.
A huge reason for the team's success this season has been defense; the Huskies are the only team in the nation to average less than one goal against per game. Goaltenders Florence Schelling and Leah Sulyma have not allowed more than two goals in any game so far this season. Schelling's 0.74 GAA and .970 save percentage lead the nation.
Fellow Hockey East rivals New Hampshire and Boston University were also ranked in both polls this week, at number four and number eight, respectively. Mercyhurst, of College Hockey America, maintained the nation's top ranking for the fifth straight week.
The No. 9 Huskies return to action on Sunday, Nov. 8 at Providence at 2 p.m.
