Cardinale, Grinold honored for contributions to hockey
Nov. 3, 2009
Boston, Mass.
Former Northeastern women's hockey standout Tina Cardinale and
Associate Athletics Director for Communications Jack Grinold will be
inducted into the Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame on Nov. 11, 2009.
Cardinale lettered for the Huskies between 1985-88 and played for the
U.S. National Team in 1990 and '92. Grinold has served the New England
hockey community for nearly 50 years and has been an innovator in the
field of sports information and publicity.
Nominees of the Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame are selected on the
basis of accomplishments in the game of hockey, sportsmanship,
character, and contributions to the team or organization.
Cardinale and Grinold certainly fit the bill.
In her four years, Cardinale accumulated 70 goals and 174 points, good
for the third-most career points in NU women's hockey history. Her 104
career assists rank second in the all-time record book and her
59-point season in 1987-88 ranks as the third-highest single-season
output in program history. During her tenure, Cardinale helped the Huskies win four straight Beanpot titles and was one of the
first three Northeastern players ever selected to the U.S. National
Team (Kelly Dyer and Jeanine Sobek).
Grinold has been the Secretary of the New England Writers Association
since 1964, during which time he also served as chairman of the hockey
and football banquets. Grinold was inducted into the Northeastern Hall
of Fame in 1985, becoming the first non-athlete or coach to be chosen
for the honor.
Including Cardinale and Grinold, Northeastern has sent 10 members to the Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame, including several former players and coaches. The first Huskies to enter the Hall were coach Ben Smith and player/coach Tom Mutch in 1999. Former women's hockey standouts Julie Piacentini and Dyer were inducted in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Men's players Fred Cusick (2004) and Sid Watson (2005) followed, before Hilary Witt and Robert Barry were honored in 2007.
Other 2009 Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame inductees include former Bruin Bob Sweeney, broadcaster Bob Wilson, Marty Pierce, Paul Surrett, Paul Schwabe, John Titus and Peter Doherty.
