Sophomore Florence Schelling (Oberengstringen, Switzerland) has been
named the Hockey East Goaltender of the Month, as announced by the
conference on Tuesday. Schelling has posted a 6-1-1 record and leads the
nation with a 0.74 GAA and a .970 save percentage. Schelling also had
three shutouts in October, including two last weekend in Vermont.
This is Schelling's second-career monthly honor as she was recognized with the Hockey East Rookie of Month award for October last season.
As a team, the Huskies have earned six Hockey East awards so far this season. Schelling has taken home three Defensive Player of the Week nods, in addition to the Goaltender of the Month award. Junior Leah Sulyma (Inuvik, Northwest Territories) was also named the Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 26, and freshman Brittany Esposito (Edmonton, Alberta) was lauded with Rookie of the Week accolades on Nov. 2.
Schelling's jaw-dropping play in net has boosted the team to its best start since 2001-02 when the Huskies went 10-0-0 to open the season. Northeastern's hot start was recognized by USCHO.com on Monday as the Huskies were ranked No. 9 in the latest national poll.
The ninth-ranked Huskies return to the ice on Sunday, Nov. 8 at Providence at 2 p.m.
