Northeastern opened the 2003-04 season with a 4-1 loss on the road to St. Lawrence in non-conference action at Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y., Saturday.
The game was scoreless until the 13:42 mark of the first period when SLU senior Sara Simard knocked in a rebound from a Christin Powers shot to put the Saints up 1-0. The Saints took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Huskies anwered in the second period, when sophomore Jennifer Beaudoin fired a shot from the left slot past Saint goaltender Rachel Barrie at the 11:12 mark. Sophomore Cyndy Kenyon assisted on the play.
With the score knotted at one apiece Laurie Ross would notch the eventual game winner for the Saints at the 13:59 mark of the third in a give-and-go with sophomore classmate Emilie Berlinguette. Ross was able to knock home the puck on the short side of Northeastern goaltender Chanda Gunn, taking the pass from Berlinguette shortly after a Saint power-play had expired.
With just 1:31 left in regulation, junior Rebecca Russell tallied an insurance marker for Saints, one-timing a pass from freshman Chelsea Grills after a dump-in from Gina Kingsbury at the point.
Saints sophomore Kate Michael added an empty-net tally to close out the scoring with 20 seconds remaining in the contest.
Barrie finished with 15 saves in the Saint net for her 53rd collegiate win. Gunn recorded 30 stops for the Huskies.
“It was a good game to start our year,” said Saint coach Paul Flanagan. “It’s important to get involved in tight games against a quality team like Northeastern early in the season. Our first-year players got some quality time and experience today and showed a lot of composure in a close contest.”
