Northeastern exploded for four first period goals and sophomore defenseman Theresa Ella assisted on three of them, as the Huskies cruised to a 5-0 victory over Boston College in Hockey East action at Matthews Arena Wednesday night.

Ella registered four assists for the game, while sophomore Cyndy Kenyon tallied two scores and assisted on another. Sophomore Katy Augustyn turned away 20 shots for her third career shutout. The Huskies improved to 7-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play. The Eagles dropped to 3-7-0 and 0-5-0.

NU wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Kenyon deflected an Ella slap shot from the point in front of the goal 2:25 into play.

Junior Lori DiGiacomo finished a picture-perfect play four minutes later to give NU a 2-0 lead 6:43 into action. Ella carried the puck into the BC zone and passed it to sophomore Chrissy Sands, who skated toward the left post before slipping a nifty pass across the crease to a wide-open DiGiacomo.

Less than two minutes later, Kenyon stole the puck from a BC player on the boards in the Eagles’ end then fired a pass to freshman Amy Goodney in front of the net for a one-timer that beat BC netminder Lisa Davis (18 saves).

Freshman Marie Desrosiers wrapped up the first period scoring for the Huskies at the 15:15 mark. Ella carried the puck out of the NU zone down the left wiing and passed up to freshman Crystal Rochon. Rochon hit Desrosiers in the slot and forward from St. Hubert, Quebec, slipped the puck between Davis’ legs to put Northeastern up 4-0.

The Eagles turned the tide in the second period, outshooting the Huskies, 15-2. However, Augustyn turned away every shot to keep BC off the scoreboard.

Although the Huskies only took two second period shots on goal, they managed to make one of them count. On a play similar to Kenyon’s first goal. Freshman Becky Peters cycled the puck across the blue line to Ella on the left side. Ella blasted a shot toward the net and Kenyon deflected the puck for her second goal of the game.

Northeastern was whistled for three straight penalties at the end of the second period, which resulted in a two minute and 40 second BC power play. The Huskies penalty kill staved off the BC threat and the momentum turned back to Northeastern.

The Huskies outshot the Eagles, 23-20, for the game. BC went 0-for-6 on the power play, while NU was 0-for-2 with a man-advantage.
