Ohio State's Jen Creary scored twice in the final five minutes of the first period to give the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead en route to a 3-0 victory over host Northeastern in non-conference play at Matthews Arena Friday night.
Melissa Glaser stopped all 30 shots for OSU (8-5-0), while Chanda Gunn made 18 saves for the Huskies (7-5-3).
In the first period, Creary stole the puck at the OSU blueline and skated around two NU defenders before roofing a backhander to Gunn's stick side at 15:38.
Creary struck again two minutes later when Meaghan Mulvaney found her open in the slot for a one-timer at 17:28. Krysta Skarda also assisted on the play.
Both the Huskies killed two first-period power plays and couldn't convert on their only opportunity in the first stanza. After the first 20 minutes, OSU held a 10-6 shot advantage.
NU came out with renewed intensity in the second period. The Huskies pressured OSU and kept the puck in the Buckeyes end throughout the period, outshooting Ohio State, 16-6. However, OSU's Jana Harrigan finished a pass from Emma Laaksonen midway through the period to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead with 11:07 remaining before intermission.
The Huskies tried to rally early in the third, but redshirt freshman Stephanie Wood couldn't convert a breakaway opportunity. NU outshot OSU, 8-5, in the final period.
Neither team capitalized on the power play with NU going 0-for-5 and OSU going 0-for-3.
