Northeastern senior goalie Chanda Gunn (28 saves) and Ohio State netminder Melissa Glaser (28 saves) put on a clinic, as the Huskies and Buckeyes skated to a 1-1 tie in non-conference action at Matthews Arena Saturday afternoon.
NU is 7-5-4, while OSU, which extended its unbeaten streak to eight games, is 8-5-0.
Gunn came up with the save of the game in overtime, stopping Buckeye junior Meaghan Mulvaney on a breakaway with two minutes left. Mulvey faked a wrister and tried to beat Gunn with a backhander, but Gunn stood her ground and made a kick save.
The Ohio State breakaway was the only shot in the extra session.
The Huskies had a power play over the final 1:58 of regulation, but couldn’t convert the opportunity. Freshman Amy Goodney almost netted her second goal of the game with 20 seconds left, but her deflection sailed just over the crossbar.
Northeastern struck first when Goodney scored her fifth goal of the season. She collected the rebound off a Cyndy Kenyon shot and patiently waited for Glaser to hit the ice before sending the puck near side for a 1-0 Husky lead. Kenyon and Marie Desrosiers picked up assists on the goal, which came at 10:04 of the first period.
OSU freshman Katie Maroney answered when she roofed a wrister past Gunn’s glove-side shoulder. Jeanne Chapple found Maroney open in the slot for her third assist of the season.
The teams skated to a scoreless second period, with NU taking the shot advantage, 10-8. Each team failed to convert on 5-on-3 opportunities in the second, with the Huskies skating for 1:07 with the two-man advantage and the Buckeyes enjoying a 22-second advantage. Gunn kept the game tied at 1-1 with a brilliant kick save with her right leg on a 2-on-1.
