Lakewood, Calif. - Husky goalie Chanda Gunn turned away 56 shots against her former team, as Northeastern and Wisconsin skated to a 1-1 tie at Glacial Gardens in Lakewood, Calif. Gunn's 56 saves breaks an eight-year-old school record, and her 23 saves in the third period is also best in NU history.

The two-game series, a college hockey showcase sponsored by the California Selects Amateur Hockey Association, wraps up Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m. EST (2 p.m. in California).

Wisconsin’s Amy Vermeulen scored the Badgers’ lone goal with assists from frosh Lindsay Macy and junior team captain Carla MacLeod at 11:47 in the third period. Less than two minutes later, Northeastern’s Jessica Coppney tallied the equalizer at 13:26 with assists from Lori DiGiacomo and Crystal Rochon.

Despite the one-month break from action, Wisconsin returned to the ice with its usual firepower. The first period saw both teams come out strong and each earned a power-play opportunity, but neither team could break the net to climb on the scoreboard. The Huskies played their strongest team defense in the first period allowing the Badgers to fire in just 11 shots-on-net out of 29 attempts. A similar sequel to the first period, Wisconsin held off two Northeastern power-plays in the middle stanza and outshot NU 21-5, but again neither team broke the scoreless mark entering the final regulation period.

With the game heading towards a scoreless tie, MacLeod sent the puck down the boards setting up Macy who swung her stick for a well-placed tip to Vermeulen. Also a member of the UW women’s soccer team, Vermeulen’s shot slipped past Gunn for a 1-0 Badger lead.

The Huskies’ Coppney scored her tying goal two minutes later as both teams continued to battle through the final minutes, but Wisconsin could not break Gunn again. A five-minute tense overtime period proved fruitless for both teams as game one of the showcase ended in a tie.

On special teams, neither team used power-plays to their advantage as the UW finished 0-3 and NU finished 0-2. The tie improves Wisconsin to 12-4-1 overall and Northeastern to 7-5-5 overall.
