Northeastern senior goalie Chanda Gunn stopped 47 shots, while Lori DiGiacomo and Cyndy Kenyon provided the offense, as the Huskies tied fourth-ranked Wisconsin for the second-consecutive game, 2-2, in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Glacial Gardens Ice Arena in Lakewood, Calif.

The two-game series, a college hockey showcase sponsored by the California Selects Amateur Hockey Association, marks the first-ever NCAA women’s hockey series played west of the Rocky Mountains.

The Badgers and Huskies skated to a 1-1 overtime tie Saturday in Game One of the series thanks Gunn’s school-record 56 saves.

Sunday’s contest opened fast and aggressive for both teams with Wisconsin taking a 13-6 shots-on-goal advantage, but DiGiacomo put NU on the scoreboard first. The NU junior found the puck behind Wisconsin’s net, came around and deflected the puck off goalie Christine Dufour’s skate for a 1-0 lead and an unassisted goal at 6:41 of the first period.

A Northeastern penalty at 7:50 set up a Wisconsin power-play, but the Badgers could not break Gunn in the NU net. With the nation’s fourth-best penalty killing unit (.916), Northeastern has not allowed a power-play goal since Nov. 22.

The second period provided a battle of special teams for the Badgers and Huskies. A checking call on Wisconsin set up a NU power-play at 6:31, but the UW defense and Dufour (18 saves) held the Huskies at bay to remain just one goal short.

Despite having their own third best power-play mark (.247) in the country to match up with Northeastern, the Badgers failed to score on two different five-on-four advantages with six shots against Gunn later during the middle stanza. The Huskies also closed the gap on overall shooting in the second period with nine shots to the Badgers 15 as the score remained locked at 1-0.

A tense third period would see both teams score to tie up the game at 2-2. Wisconsin finally climbed on the scoreboard at 9:24 as Molly Engstrom fired one past Gunn with assists from Meaghan Mikkelson and Amy Vermeulen. The Huskies roared back four minutes later to reclaim the lead off of a Kenyon goal at 13:57 to put NU up 2-1. Freshman Marie Desrosiers and sophomore Theresa Ella assisted on the play.

The Badgers tallied a late power-play goal by Bobbi-Jo Slusar to tie the game at 15:09, off assists from Lindsay Macy and Jackie Friesen. The goal snapped Northeastern’s 39-game streak of penalty kills.

With five and two shots on goal respectively, Wisconsin and Northeastern fought through a five-minute overtime period to no avail as the clock ran down on the tied series.
