Senior goalie Chanda Gunn stopped 28 shots for her third shutout of the season, while freshman Marie Desrosiers had a goal and two assists, as Northeastern blanked Connecticut, 3-0, in Hockey East action at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs Friday night.
NU improves to 10-5-6 overall and 4-3-2 in Hockey East play, while UConn slips to 7-13-3 and 3-4-1.
Northeastern got on the board first when Rachael Bertram found the back of the net with only 13 seconds remaining in the first period. With the puck free in front of the NU goal, UConn peppered Gunn with three consecutive shots. Gunn stoned all three attempts and NU mounted a counter-attack. Desrosiers lofted the puck into the UConn end and Ashly Waggoner collected the puck in the corner and passed to Bertram in the right face-off circle. Bertram fired a one-timer passed UConn goalie Shannon Murphy (38) for a 1-0 lead.
In the second stanza, Northeastern thwarted a 30-second UConn two-man advantage and put 13 shots on the UConn goal, but the score remained 1-0 after 40 minutes of action.
Desrosiers gave NU a 2-0 lead with a wrap-around goal at 6:33. Amy Goodney assisted on the play. Theresa Ella added an empty netter with 1:23 remaining to seal the victory.
