Freshmen Susannah Brokl and Marie Desrosiers both scored for Northeastern, but the Huskies couldn't overcome a 2-0 first-period deficit, falling 4-2 to Connecticut in Hockey East action at Matthews Arena Saturday night.
NU falls to 13-9-7 overall and 7-6-3 in conference play, while UConn improves to 9-17-5 and 5-9-3. Both teams are fighting for the final two playoff spots with Maine (7-9-2 HEA) with the 20-game regular season wrapping up. The teams square off again Sunday at UConn Ice Arena (2 p.m.).
UConn capitalized on 3-of-6 power-play opportunities and wasn't whistled for a single penalty en route to victory.
Erika Spaeth and Tiffany Owen both tallied first-period goals for Connecticut, at 6:02 and 15:01, respectively for a 2-0 lead heading into first intermission.
With NU trailing 2-0 in the third period and Connecticut on its fourth power play of the game, Desrosiers stole a UConn pass and made a nifty move to beat goalie Kaitlyn Shain (30 saves) for a short-handed goal at the 9:32 mark. However, Connecticut went on to convert on the same man-advantage situation to regain its two-goal cushion after a goal by Jacquelyn McGuire.
Brokl scored her first collegiate goal and point at 14:55 of the third period to bring the Huskies within 3-2. Fellow freshman Melissa Wigmore also collected her first collegiate point by assisting on the play.
Owens added an empty-net goal with 26 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.
Senior goalie Chanda Gunn made 34 saves for Northeastern, including 15 in the third period, as the Huskies tried to kill off four power plays.
