Northeastern senior goalie Chanda Gunn made 16 saves, but the Huskies were shut out for the second straight game by Providence, falling, 2-0, to the Friars in Hockey East action Sunday afternoon at Matthews Arena.
The Huskies fall to 13-11-8 overall and 7-8-4 in Hockey East play. The Friars improve to 17-13-2 and 12-5-1.
Providence goalie Jana Bugden made 14 saves for the shutout. Both teams combined for a total of 32 shots with PC outshooting NU, 18-14.
Immediately following a Husky failed power-play opportunity in the first period, freshman Mia Mucci was whistled for holding the stick. A minute and a half into PC power play, Katelynn Laffin circled around the back of the net and skated in on Gunn uncontested and slipped a backhander between her legs to give the Friars a 1-0 lead at the 13:51 mark. Sonny Watrous and Darlene Stephenson assisted on the play.
The second period was uneventful with both teams combining for eight shots with the Friars holding a 6-2 edge. The play heated up just before the second intermission when NU was whistled for consecutive penalties and killed off a one minute and 40 second PC 5-on-3 power play. Gunn was tested twice, as the NU penalty kill did a good job of clogging the middle and blocking shots from the point. After 40 minutes of play, shots were even at 10 apiece.
Neither team could generate any offense in the final stanza, but the Friars were able to add an empty net goal by Karen Thatcher with one second left in regulation.
