The Northeastern women’s hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to seven games with a thrilling overtime victory against Princeton Sunday at Matthews Arena. Husky sophomore defenseman Theresa Ella netted the game-winner 2:51 into the extra frame after finishing off a centering feed from co-captain Lori DiGiacomo.

"Theresa Ella had a great weekend," said NU coach Joy Woog. "She's been the backbone of our defensive core. She's a solid two-way player who isn't afraid to jump up on offense, and that's how she scored her goal."

After a season-opening loss to St. Lawrence, Northeastern has since gone 5-0-2. Princeton, which entered the game undefeated and averaging five goals per game, drops to 3-1-0.

The Huskies struck first on a goal by Cyndy Kenyon just 2:38 into the first period. It was Kenyon’s fourth goal in three games, while Amy Goodney and Rebecca Peters picked up assists. Later in the first, the Huskies successfully killed off 1:15 of 5-on-3 pressure from the Tigers. However an interference call on Ella led to a game-tying Princeton score off the stick of Gretchen Anderson with under four minutes remaining in the period.

The teams skated to a scoreless second frame, dominated by the Tigers who posted a 13-3 shot advantage over the Huskies.

NU Freshman Marie Desrosiers put her team back on top 4:50 into the third period with a rebound goal in front of Megan Van Beuskom’s net. "I tipped the shot from (Rachael) Bertram and the goalie gave up the rebound," Desrosiers said. "Then I just kept whacking at it and it went in." Bertram and Kenyon picked up assists on the goal, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead they would hold until the closing seconds of regulation.

"Cyndy had been pushing for her first goal of the season, and since then she's scored in every game," Woog said. "And Marie, we brought her here because we knew she could score goals."

Trailing by a goal with 1:21 left in the game, Princeton coach Jeff Kampersal pulled his goalie, then saw his team earn a 6-on-4 advantage after Crystal Rochon was called for a late slash. With time winding down, Anderson put a low shot on Katy Augustyn who made the stick save, but allowed a rebound to a wide-open Susan Hobson. The Princeton senior deposited the rebound past Augustyn to tie the game with 17.3 seconds left in regulation.

Princeton outshot the Huskies 4-2 in overtime, but Ella’s third goal of the season capped off a Husky weekend sweep of Yale and Princeton.

As for Augustyn, she upped her collegiate record to 3-0-0 and was happy with her 41-save performance against a previously undefeated team.

"This game helps my confidence a lot," Augustyn said. "They were the best team I've played against (at Northeastern)."

NU will next take on Clarkson at Matthews Arena Friday, Nov. 14, the final contest in its current five-game homestand.
