The Huskies lost their season-opener, 7-2, to Niagara on Friday at Dwyer Arena in Niagara Falls, N.Y. Freshman Nikki Petrich scored in her collegiate debut and junior Kathryn Sands scored her first career goal.
The game was the first under head coach Laura Schuler. The Huskies are 0-1-0 entering Saturday's game with Niagara. Niagara notched its first win of the season to improve to 1-2-0.
Down 3-0, Sands scored a power-play goal 11:22 into the second period. She got assists from Lindsay Snider and Ashley Bielawski.
Petrich followed with another power-play goal at 19:27 in the second. Crystal Rochon and Snider both got assists to make it 3-2.
The Huskies couldn't hold the Niagara offense at bay, however, and the Purple Eagles notched four unanswered goals before the game was done. Candice Moxley got her first career hat trick for Niagara.
Niagara scored two first period goals to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Niagara then scored 6:21 into the second to take a 3-0 lead. Two of the Purple Eagles' first three goals were shorthanded scores by Ashley Riggs.
The Huskies face off with Niagara in the second of this weekend's two-game series at 2 p.m. at Dwyer Arena.
