| 2004-05 Schedule/Results Northeastern 4, Connecticut 4 (OT)
Northeastern took a 3-1 lead into the third period, but it disappeared courtesy of Jaclyn Hawkins who had a hat trick in the third period alone. The teams settled for a 4-4 tie after overtime. Crystal Rochon, who had two goals this season entering the game, had two goals and an assist in this match. Nikki Petrich scored two goals as well. Amy Goodney assisted on three goals. But the highlight of the day was Marisa Hourihan breaking her second school record in just six days. The goalie had 48 saves, and she now holds the record for most saves in a single season with plenty of season left to add to it. Erika Silva had the record of 858 saves in the 2000-01 season. Hourihan now stands at 872 and lots more counting. She broke the single game saves record in a 3-2 overtime loss five nights earlier against Providence when she stopped 57 Friar shots. Now she will chase the men's school record which stands at 1,155 by Marc Robitaille from the 1997-98 season. NU and UConn each took a point out of this game. UConn is now third in Hockey East at 4-4-2 with an overall record of 8-10-6. NU is in sixth place with a Hockey East record of 2-9-1 and 3-18-2 overall. UConn came out with a surge to open the game, but a pesky NU defense held them scoreless through the first period and through two man-downs. UConn took two quick penalties at 12:01 and 13:27, and NU threatened several times in their zone. After UConn got a player back, Amy Goodney from behind the net fed Crystal Rochon a pass in the middle of the right face-off circle. Rochon fired from the tough angle and sent it through the left side of the goal at 14:56. It was the first time this month NU scored first. UConn had the shot lead at 11-5, but the game belonged to NU. The Goodney/Rochon connection teamed up for a second goal just over three minutes later at 18:01. It was Rochon's second of the game and assist no. two of the game for Goodney. It looked as though the Huskies would go into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead, but the hometown Huskies had better ideas. Alicia Romalla fired a shot from way back. Hourihan juggled it, and the puck unfortunately made it past the red. The Huskies still went into the locker room up 2-1. NU fed off their winning first period and took control at the beginning of the second. They had four of the first five shots on net. A controversial delay of game call sent a NU player to the penalty box, but that did not bother the Huskies of Huntington Ave. Rochon almost got her hat trick on a break-away, and the NU defense kept UConn at bay. At 11:26, the goal rush continued for NU. Goodney added her third assist of the game. This time it was to Nikki Petrich, who scored a peanut butter goal off the top of the net from inside the left face-off circle. Shots were 12-7 in the period in favor of UConn and 26-14 for the game, but the golden girl in goal (Hourihan) along with her defense was simply playing better than their counterparts on the scoreboard. NU had a power play a few minutes into the third period, but UConn took the momentum away. A two on none breakaway ended with Jaclyn Hawkins finding the back of the net for the short-handed goal. NU's lead was now cut in half to 3-2 with 15:29 still left to play. UConn kept their surging comeback going and did not allow an NU shot in the third period until they had scored their third goal to tie the game. Hawkins used her crafty pouck-handling skills for her second goal of the game at 9:41. Two minutes later, Petrich got her second goal in a row on a wrist shot from Rochon and Lori DiGiacomo. At 2:35, NU was called for a tough holding penalty to give UConn the power play. They cashed in, and it was Hawkins again who slid the puck in past Hourihan from the right side to the lower right corner of the goal. The game went to overtime with UConn having a 48-19 shot advantage. Both teams each got a power play in the overtime, but each team kept each other at a stale mate. The game ended in a 4-4 tie. "It was definitely an up and down game," explained Goodney afterwards. "I thought we could have come out with the win, but unfortunately we didn't. We have to keep our leads. I think we let up a little bit and started to (just) play defense. That is when they came and attacked us." NU has a tough next few games ahead of them. They will face #8 New Hampshire on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena. "We know they have strong lines, and we hope to take them out. Our last game against them they beat us, but we have to play strong in our d-zone and get some breaks in the offensive zone. We'll see what happens." Tuesday the 8th will be Beanpot time, and the Huskies will play #6 Harvard in the second match at 8 p.m. The Women's Beanpot will be held at Matthews Arena both weekends with games at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
