For the second time in four games, the Huskies had a two-goal lead heading into the third period. Unfortunately, for the second time in four games, they had to settle for a 4-4 tie. BC got two goals in the third period by Kerri Sanders and Sarah Courtney to send the game into overtime. On the NU side, Nikki Petrich and Crystal Rochon each finished the game with two goals and an assist. Amy Goodney and Lori DiGiacomo had two assists apiece, and Marisa Hourihan made 35 saves in goal. BC outshot NU, 39-16, overall.

BC is now 3-8-3 in Hockey East play (7-15-4 overall) and has jumped into fourth place in Hockey East with nine points. Northeastern gained some ground in the Hockey East standings with a 2-10-2 record now (3-20-3 overall). The Huskies have six points for sixth place. Maine is sandwiched between the two teams with eight points and a fifth place spot in the standings after they were defeated by UNH, 5-2.

The teams exchanged power play goals within three minutes to open up the game. Crystal Rochon scored her sixth goal of the season at 1:57 on a point blank shot just outside of the crease. Petrich took the puck from Lindsay Snider, came up strong on the left side, and made the extra, unselfish pass to Rochon who pounded it home.

BC would answer just 50 seconds later on their own power play opportunity. Deborah Spillane, a strong candidate for Hockey East Rookie of the Year, took a pass from classmate Sarah Feldman and shot the puck past Hourihan, glove side, to tie the game at 1-1. The teams kept each other in check with BC holding a slight advantage on possession, and the period ended tied with the Eagles outshooting the Huskies, 9-6.

BC came out with force in the second period and dominated play. They took the lead on a Sarah Courtney score from Erin Blood at 6:29. But NU wasted no time to get back into this one. Rochon stayed hot with her scoring and tied the game up at 7:38 courtesy of Jennifer Beaudoin and Amy Goodney.

Thanks to an interference penalty on the BC goalie, NU had a golden opportunity with a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:33. Quandt and the Eagles paid the price as Nikki Petrich scored two power play goals just 1:06 apart. Assisting on Petrich’s goals were Rochon, Goodney, and Lori DiGiacomo. Time of the goals were 16:53 and 17:59. The second period ended 4-2 in favor of NU, even though the Eagles outshot them 12-7.

BC came out with all the heart in the third period, and they got two goals for it. Captain Kerri Sanders scored the first goal on a power play at 9:13 with assists from Spillane and Krystal Strassman. Courtney added a second goal to her career game with her second goal of the game with an assist from Nancy Gillis at 13:35 to tie things up. BC outshot NU 16-2 in the third period, and the game went into overtime.

“We really needed (at least) the point, and we knew we needed to get two goals in,” said BC captain and Hockey Humanitarian finalist, Sarah Carlson. “It was a lot of teamwork, and a lot of hard work, but we got it done.”

NU started the overtime period on a power play, but got nothing out of it. After NU killed a power play for BC, the seconds were winding down. With the puck being handled by NU in the BC zone, Spillane stole the puck and began a break-away in the final seconds. She got a good shot off, but Hourihan made the crucial save. The buzzer then sounded, and the Huskies escaped with a 4-4 tie and another point in the Hockey East Standings.

This was the second time in four outings that the Huskies led by two goals going into the third period. Both times, they came out with a tie.

“In the third period, we had three penalties to their one,” said Schuler. “They are going to get more shots on net and more scoring opportunities when you are spending six minutes in the period trying to defend a power play. We need to stay out of the box. I think we lost that period because we were in the penalty box.”

Schuler added that when the team is ahead towards the end of the game in the future as they were again today, they need to do a better job of staying out of the penalty box so they can get more scoring opportunities.

“Any time you give the other team a numerical advantage, it is tough to continuously kill something like that off. It causes your players to get tired,” said Schuler.

NU will be back in action on Tuesday night in the consolation match of the Beanpot. The game is against BU at 5:00 p.m. BU is a club team that will elevate themselves to Div. I and Hockey East for the 2005-06 season.

After the Beanpot, the team travels for a two-game set at Maine next weekend. With the season winding down, the Huskies are in a must win situation if they want a top four finish and a berth in the Hockey East Semifinals. They are currently three points behind BC and fourth place with six league games left to play.
