Northeastern collected their first victory of the season with a 3-0 win over the Quinnipiac Bobcats Tuesday night at Matthews Arena. The victory was the first for head coach Laura Schuler, who took over behind the bench before the 2004-05 season.
Northeastern improves to 1-2 this season while Quinnipiac falls ot 2-4. The win continues the Huskies dominance of the Bobcats, bringing the all-time series record to 6-0-2.
After a scoreless first period, sophomore Stephanie Wood scored the first and deciding goal 13:55 into the second period thanks to an assist from Marie Desrosiers. Captain Lori DiGiacomo and junior Jennifer Beaudoin both added power-play goals in the third to seal the victory.
Junior goaltender Marisa Hourihan recorded her third career shutout with 30 saves including 16 in the second period. Quinnipiac had 13 power-play chances and Hourihan was up to the challenge with several amazing saves.
The game was filled with penalties. Quinnipiac failed to convert on 13 power-plays and were called for 10 penalties of their own. Northeastern was able to capitalize on its power-plays in the third period with two insurance goals.
Schuler decided to mix up the lines after two early season losses to Niagara in an attempt to generate more offense. The young group of Husky forwards were all over the ice and created numerous scoring oppurtunities. The defensive pairings of Jennifer Beaudoin and Lori DiGiacomo shut down the opposition and were able to force turnovers and turn them into points.
The Huskies will begin their Hockey East schedule when they travel to New Hampshire on Nov. 3 for a 7 p.m game against the Wildcats.
