The Northeastern women's hockey team kicked off its 2005-06 campaign on the right foot, posting a 4-3 victory over Boston University Friday, Oct. 4 at Matthews Arena. Four different Huskies scored in the contest, with Crystal Rochon potting the game-winner. The game was BU's first as a varsity team.
The Terriers got on the board first, with Caroline Bourdeau scoring the first goal in BU history at 11:32 of the first period. Maeghan Ouimet sped down the right side of the ice and found Bourdeau in the slot. Bourdeau then deked around NU goalie Marisa Hourihan to the far side to put BU up 1-0
NU tied the game at the 18:02 mark, with Ashley Bielawski snapping a wicked wrist shot to the near side of BU goalie Allyse Wilcox, making the game 1-1.
The Huskies took their first lead of the contest 6:30 into the second period, with Amy Goodney netting her first tally of the season. Nikki Petrich kicked the puck to an open Goodney on the doorstep, and the junior co-captain slipped the puck to the far side of Wilcox.
NU widened its lead to 3-1 at 14:43 of the second, as Jessica Coppney tallied her first goal for the Huskies. Freshman Cassie Sperry went into the corner and kicked the loose puck to Coppney behind the net. The junior then wrapped the puck around to the far side and flipped it high above a sprawling Wilcox.
BU trimmed the lead to one at 19:10 of the second on a power play. Caitlin Reddy pushed a loose puck to Genevieve Laing, who snapped a puck past Hourihan to make the score 3-2.
Rochon registered the game-winner at 5:28 of the third on a redirection of an Erin Reil shot. Ali Bielawski took the puck on the left-side boards and found Reil at the near point. Reil's shot was partially deflected by a BU defender, but went right to Rochon, who roofed the puck to the glove side.
BU made the game closer at 16:53, with Gina Kearns scoring on a short-handed breakaway. Just under a minute later, at 17:46, BU had an odd-man rush, once again on the short hand. Erin Seman stormed down the slot and tried to redirect a Stephanie Armstrong pass, but instead slammed into Hourihan, elbowing the goaltender in the head. Seman was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the offense.
Hourihan made 28 saves in the victory, while Wilcox made 28 saves in a losing effort. The Huskies went 0-8 on the power play, while BU was 1-8.
NU is back in action on Friday, Oct. 14, when it plays host to Ohio State for a 7 p.m. contest.
