| 2005-06 Schedule/Results Northeastern 3, Connecticut 2
The Northeastern women's hockey team snapped a 10-game winless streak and earned a key 3-2 victory over Connecticut on Sunday, Nov. 13 at Matthews Arena. Jessica Coppney scored the game-winning goal for the Huskies with 1:31 to play in regulation and junior Ashley Bielawski scored a goal and an assist in the game. Marisa Hourihan made 29 saves in the victory, as NU improved to 2-9-1 on the season (2-4-1 Hockey East). Connecticut fell to 3-6-0 (2-2-0 HE) with the victory. Coppney scored the game-winner off a rebound at the 18:29 mark of the third to give NU the victory. Nikki Petrich shot a backhander from between the circles that UConn goalie Kaitlyn Shain kicked away. But Coppney gobbled up the rebound and slid it past Shain to the near side for her second goal of the season. It appeared that the home squad was going to pull away for the victory midway through the third, as Ali Bielawski's first career goal gave NU a 2-0 lead at 11:53 of the third. The elder Bielawski picked up an assist on the play. UConn coach Heather Linstad sensed her team was losing the momentum battle, and called a timeout with 6:19 to play in the third. The visitors responded, scoring back to back goals at 14:05 and 14:30 to knot the game at two. Kristen Russell scored the first for UConn, one-timing a Jaclyn Hawkins crossing pass to the far side of Hourihan for her fourth goal of the season. Just 25 seconds later, Connecticut's Jennifer Houlden found a wide-open Samantha Reid in the low slot, and Reid went high to the glove side for her first goal of the year. Russell was credited with the second assist on the play. Northeastern got on the board at the 18:54 mark of the second period, as junior Ashley Bielawski stuffed home a rebound for her fourth goal of the season. Cassie Sperry cut to the net along the goal line extended and attempted a backhander that UConn’s Kaitlyn Shain stopped, but Bielawski scrambled to the puck and beat Shain to the far side. The goal broke a scoreless string of 183:37 for the home squad. The teams were scoreless at the end of the first period, but each squad had its fair share of chances. Northeastern moved the puck very well on its only power play, but the visitors were able to block four NU shots and killed off the penalty. In the final minute of the period, UConn won a neutral zone faceoff, springing a two-on-one break. Freshman defenseman Brianna Uliasz moved in untouched on Marisa Hourihan, but the NU netminder turned away the opponent’s backhander to send the teams to the locker room scoreless. The game saw each team whistled for just three penalties, and both teams went 0-for-2 on the man advantage. NU outshot UConn 32-31 in he contest. Northeastern is back in action next Saturday, Nov. 19 as the New Hampshire Wildcats come to Boston for a conference game. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena.
